“Children’s love is a tangible representation of God’s grace.” Bre’Ayesia and Elijah are tangible representations of God’s grace to me. Because of two bags of takis, I got to experience one of God’s blessings.
Last Wednesday I took some snacks to Bre and Eli’s school. I had been there a few times before, but this one was quite different. I sat with Elijah and saw how gentle he was when a handicapped child ran up to him and gave him a bear hug. I think most fifth grade boys would’ve rejected him, but Eli isn’t like most fifth graders. He throws great 3-pointers, is humorously arrogant, and has a winsome smile. He’s also kind and loves making people laugh. I saw Bre during the next lunch, and sat at her girl’s table while she munched on her friend’s birthday cupcakes and my takis. Bre was righteously angry — one of her friends had yanked her hair and plucked it right off her temple. She told me she was gonna “bop” her on the head, and it was hard to hide my grin. Beside that incident, I noticed that the birthday girl was decked out in a pink princess sash with a gold tiara. Upon further inspection, her two mothers were there eating white chocolate Hershey’s kisses. Weird, right? I didn’t expect a couple bags of takis would bring me such an adventure. God gave me a gift. I didn’t expect to see such a diverse people, but He gave it to me. At the end of the day, despite our differences, humans are humans and God is God. He showed me that in the midst of my doubts for my profession that He was fully present and trustworthy to provide. Best 3 dollars I’ve spent!
